After a weekend of little to no breeze but horrendous sea conditions it was a relief to punch out through the heads on a Monday afternoon (bless daylight savings), to be greeted by near enough perfect conditions.
Under the water was a different story though, the current was roaring at about 3knts. This was enough to cause massive up-welling’s off the face of the local inshore reefs making anchoring and fishing baits a challenge. With bait fish presenting at every reef we passed over made for the filling of the live bait well with Slimey Macks and Yakka’s stress free. Just a few more minutes of flat out motoring under the power of the Evinrude Etec and we’d be sending the livies out in hope!
Upon arriving at our first spot it was even clearer that anchoring was not going to be the easy option, though with blue water registering at 25degrees we weren’t too worried. A live bait was sent aft of the boat and the soft plastics were launch forward of the drift on the hunt for snapper.
The afternoon didn’t quite pan out the way that we’d expected. Usually we’d expect to take a few reds on the Berkley Gulps and if we’re lucky a King, AJ, Sambo, Wahoo or Mackerel on the live bait… but not today! The kings were smashing the plastics and the reds chomping the live baits!!! We finished up with a few nice snapper and some thumping kings (to 16kg), the CBB Custom Snapper Slayer really stood up to the punishment of the biggest kings that day, I was proud of that sick little rod haha.
It’s a funny game fishing some times… No 24hr period is the same and the last thing you condition yourself to expecting can be the first thing to happen YEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!
