The Hype Around SIMRAD Marine Electronics Proven Worthy.

Having experienced quite a few of the different sounder/gps chartplotter options available on the market we weren’t really sold on any one brand or unit until we came across the Lowrance HDS 9 touch.
The Lowrance HDS9 Touch was an outstanding unit. Tough, practical and worked it’s backside off for the user. Though we always had picture clarity issues with our sounder whilst underway (anything over 8knts). We put the lack of picture at speed down to transducer positioning and put up with it for years.
Then with the increase in popularity in the Dave Irvine Memorial Snapper Classic and the presence of the ever capable Sydney crews came the name SIMRAD… We’d not heard of the SIMRAD brand or their equipment but the best crews were using their gear and using to their advantage, beating us every year! Thus a curiosity in the performance of the SIMRAD gear was born.

Five years down the track a SIMRAD NSS12 install later accompanied by a 1kwt through hull transducer, 3D structure scan and a WiFi module later and well… The hype, reputation and quality of the equipment is LEGIT!
And to prove the point during the 2016 Dave Irvine after a friendly tip off by Bally we found ourselves in somewhat unchartered depths targeting reds on plastics, 45 to 50m. What we witnessed on one particular cast was mind blowing…

Andrew: Casts 100m forward of the drift, whips line to allow easy descent.

Sam: ‘There’s your plastic bruz, 25m and falling… 35m… 40m… THERE’S AN ARCH APPROACHING YOUR PLASTIC!’

Andrew: ‘Yeah bud I’M ON!’

Sam: ‘Haha YEWWWWWWW he’s at 45m bruzza, turn him! 40m, 35m, 20m… he’s yours now, ease off and take your time’ ☺
The result being a prime condition 77cm snapper (followed a 91.7cm beast!)

Reece: ‘I cannot believe that we could see that!!!

Pretty much sums up the NSS12 and the SIMRAD reputation… For all deep water bar cod hunters, you’re going to need one of these. YEWWWWW!!!
